With the end of my journey in Korea, the feeling of returning home to Hawaii was so surreal and I was unable to fathom the thought of leaving. Reflecting over this past year, if I were to reset and do it all over again, I would not change a single part of this entire experience. There were many great things and there were also bad things, but I feel that every little bit has helped me mature more and learn a lot from this experience.
One of the few thing I learned while being in Korea is that you always have to have an open mind. Because of the difference in culture, many things can be very different and uncomfortable but if you keep an open mind, these things could become more enjoyable or bearable. One example is how different Korean food is. Some of the few outrageous things that they eat are silk worms, dog, and live octopus. I was able to try most of these foods and even though some were better than expected while others were plain disgusting, I would not have been able to know without experiencing the foods firsthand. Another thing I learned while being in Korea is that compared to Hawaii, the culture is very fast paced and so you need to constantly be aware of where your footing is or you might get overcome by the pace of everyday life. The top three reasons of why I am glad that I chose Korea is the relationships made, the food, and the overall experience that I had in the country. Being that one of my majors is Korean, it was really cool to make a lot of Korean speaking friends and be able to put my major to the test. Also, being that my heritage is Korean, I really enjoyed the food and culture of my own heritage. All in all, the overall 1 year experience that I had in Korea has been a wonderful experience that has left a big mark in my life.
